Bio: Salman Khan, legal name Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan, is the firstborn of the celebrated screenwriter of the 1970s Salim Khan (Seeta Aur Geeta, Zanjeer, Sholay, Deewar, Don) and his first wife Salma Khan. Born on December 27, 1965 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, he is the eldest of the Khan pack - two brothers Arbaaz and Sohail, and two sisters Alvira and Arpita (she was adopted by his family). Salman spent the first few years of schooling at the illustrious Scindia School in Gwalior, followed by St Stanislaus High School in Mumbai. Being part of a film family, movies were an intrinsic part of Salman’s childhood existence. So naturally during his growing up years he wanted to be a writer/director. But coz of his good looks Salman got into modeling which propelled a career in acting. Bhai, as he is fondly acknowledged by beloveds, made his first Hindi film appearance with a brief role in Rekha’s Biwi Ho Toh Aisi (1988), but it was the lead part in Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) that marked his arrival in Bollywood. He went on to do a series of films that retained his position of a hot star in the early 90s, but once again Sooraj Barjatya’s film Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) pushed his star status to the next level. Another turning point of his career happened with Prabhu Deva’s Wanted, followed by Dabangg, Ready and Bodyguard which established him as the blockbuster actor in the early 2000s. Despite the weak story lines of these films, they turned to be the biggest grosser in the respective years.

Prabhu Dheva directorial, Action Jackson, has created a lot of buzz ever since it’s trailer release. The film that stars Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam, Manasvi Mamgai and Kunal Roy Kapur will hit the screens today. What is it about: Vishy (Ajay Devgn) is a fun loving and carefree small time crook and Moosa (Kunal Roy Kapur) is his friend as well as accomplice in all his actions, adventures and escapades. It is a coincidence that Vishy meets Khushi (Sonakshi) one day. Khushi is considered the unluckiest girl by her friends because bad luck follows her like a shadow everywhere. But her luck changes the day she meets Vishy. And then the realization that Vishy is lucky for her dawns on her when she bumps into him for the third time. From then on she relentlessly tries to pursue him so that her luck changes. As a result there are a lot of funny incidents that lead to them falling in love with each other. One day a man accidentally sees Vishy’s picture and gets stunned and he makes a call and somehow tries to inform Mafioso Xavier, a deadly and dreaded international Mafia Don. Xavier immediately dispatches his notorious henchmen to Mumbai. Vishy is unaware that a whole network of Police and Underworld are on the lookout for him. Vishy is in shock at the sudden turn of events and soon a deadly secret unfolds before him. We won’t disclose this secret for those who want to watch the film. What’s hot: Ajay Devgn looks hot in his well sculpted avatar and is seen bare chested in most of the scenes. Sonakshi Sinha, as always, has pulled off the bubbly talkative love interest of the hero very well. Despite the minimal screen space, Yami Gautam makes the best of her presence. Manaswi Mamgai, the newbie, ups the hotness quotient of the film. Kunal Roy Kapur and Ajay have some great comic punch lines which will leave you splits. The music by Himesh Reshammiya is decent and foot tapping, however, the songs lose their charm because of tacky lyrics. Himesh does belt out a great romantic number which features Yami and Ajay. What’s not: The plot of Action Jackson is very confusing so much that you’ll have no idea as to what’s going on throughout the film. Prabhu Dheva’s direction just simply falls flat here. Even an actor as brilliant as Ajay does nothing more than to show-off his hot bod. Manaswi Mamgai has throughout portrayed only one expression, which makes her look like some Ramsay Brothers’ horror film actress. And Yami Gautam and Kunal Roy Kapur’s acting talent seems to have gone wasted for the most part. Prabhu Dheva is a brilliant dancer and he proves the same at the end with his dance moves in the AJ theme song, but he sure shouldn’t have asked Ajay to imitate him. Ajay seemed uncomfortable doing the dance steps and in some scenes you could actually see Ajay trying to look at the choreographers behind the camera for help. Also defying all logic, the movie has scenes where Manasvi kills people by stabbing them, but somehow mysteriously they comeback alive in the end. The villain’s gang has a dress code which further reduces credibility. And to top it up, a huge-built henchman from the villain’s gang gets beaten to pulp by just one slap of Ajay Devgn (Wow!). Ajay’s double role was an unnecessary element since all he had to do was beat up the goons. So the plot could have been kept simple by just that. Verdict: Only a die-hard Ajay fan can walk out of the film without regretting the of time and money spent and wasted on the film.</div>

Ever since the first look and promos were out, there was a special quality about J Vasanthabalan’s Kaaviya Thalaivan which got me excited. Though period films are not new in Tamil cinema, I knew Kaaviya Thalaivan would stand out from the lot as it was telling a story about theatre artist and actors rather kings and queens and wars. My excitement knew no bounds when AR Rahman’s brilliant music album was unveiled and I was eagerly waiting for this day to figure if Siddharth-Prithviraj starrer delivers its promise or leaves me disappointed. Lets quickly dive into the review and see what Kaaviya Thalaivan has to offer. What’s it about: The film tells a story about a theatre group in per-independence era run by ace veteran theatre artist Siva Dasan played by Naseer who takes in two young boys in his company – Kali and Gomathi played by Siddharth and Prithviraj respectively. Though Gomathi eyes to be Siva Dasan’s favourite, it is Kali who charms him with his brilliant histrionics. This leads to jealousy swelling in the heart of Gomathi. Meanwhile, Kali falls in love with zamindar’s daughter and Vadivu, who joins the theatre and catches the eye of Gomathi. When Gomathi comes to know about Kali’s affair, he informs it to the guru who in anger asks Kali to take pledge of never seeing the Zamindar’s daughter again. Fearing their lives from Zamindar’s wrath, the theatre group flees to an another town. All of a sudden Gomathi becomes the Guru’s new favourite and Kali is sidelined and neglected by Siva Dasan. One night, after having a tiff with Kali, Siva Dasan passes away and Gomathi takes over the drama company. Gomathi blames Kali for guru’s death and asks him to leave. As fate has it, after few years Kali and Gomathi meet again, which leads Kali stealing Gomathi’s thunder on stage yet again. Not just that, he is infuriated to find that Vadivu loves Kali. Later, Kali is taken over by the independence struggle as he starts doing plays on freedom struggle, which get him in trouble. Kali’s plays gain immense popularity, leaving no audience for traditional plays dished out by Gomathi and group. Does the tiff between Kali and Gomathi end? Does Gomathi turn a new leaf? I guess you will have to find out on your own. What’s good: Kudos to writer-director Vasanthabalan for stepping out of the comfort zone of regular potboilers and delivering a refreshing film which is high on drama that keeps you engaged. Siddharth is the heart and soul of the film as the actor dances, performs, cries, laughs showing off the wide range of emotions which he is capable of delivering. Playing the good guy can generally be boring, but looks like Siddharth had lot of fun playing Kali as his energy and enthusiasm transcends through the screen. Prithviraj is the surprise package in the film as his villainous act is sure to floor you. The actor aptly generates the empathy of audience towards his character, who is tired of losing to Kali all his life. Vedhicka has limited screen time, but the pretty lass manages to impress with her theatrical abilities. Nasseer is in fine form as guru Siva Dasan and proves why he is such a revered actor in Tamil cinema. Thambi Ramaiah and other supporting cast has done a decent job too. AR Rahman’s music gives great boost to the narrative as I found myself humming and tapping my feet along with all the songs. Karna Motcham is a stroke of magic by Mozart of Madras as I fought hard to hold back my tears. What’s bad: It is hard to say something bad about a film like Kaaviya Thalaivan which ticks off the right boxes in all aspects of film making. But if I had to pin point one, then it had to be the slow pacing of the film. Vasanthabalan’s film at times becomes so self absorbed in it’s song and dance that it starts to drag a bit. Also the director has tried to convey a lot of things in a single film, which has also led to the film’s run time stretching over two and a half hours. What to do? Siddharth strikes gold yet again with Kaaviya Thalaivan, but the film belongs to Prithviraj who shines as a baddie. Watch the film for three reasons – Siddharth, Prithviraj and AR Rahman. While you guys head to see KT on big screen, I am off to catch a local play around my neighbourhood, all thanks to KT. See you around folks! When Batman, a masked crusader who saves the city from villains at night, meets Rang De Basanti, a film about a bunch of kids becoming rebels by turn of events, we get Rensil D’Silva’s Ungli. Starring an ensemble cast of Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Kangana Ranaut, Sanjay Dutt, Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi, Ungli is a film which shows sparks of brilliance here and there, but alas falters to rise above the Bollywood clichés. Without taking up more time, I will quickly take you through the review and let you know why Ungli disappointed me as I left the cinema hall. What’s it about: Four friends Abhay, Maya, Goti and Kalim may seem like normal people stuck in their boring jobs. But look closely as there is more than what meets the eye. At nightfall, these bunch of friends turn into masked social vigilantes, who teach lessons to corrupt officers and bureaucrats by unconventional ways. Lovingly called as Ungli gang by the masses, their growing popularity becomes a headache for police department as Inspector Kale is assigned to nab the notorious gang. Kale seeks help of Nikhil, an easy going street smart cop, to assist him in catching hold of Ungli gang. Nikhil manages to win the trust of the gang by becoming one of them, but later is caught confused as to where his loyalties lie – police or Ungli gang. Can Kale nab the rebellious gang? And which side will Nikhil choose to be faithful to? What’s good: The film kicks off to a bright start as the first hour of the film is brisk and entertaining. The unique ways of Ungli gang of punishing the corrupt officers is fun as it managed to keep me interested. If we talk about the performances, I feel the film just belongs to two actors – Randeep Hooda and Emraan Hashmi. Randeep Hooda as a crime journalist cum Ungli gang leader manages to ooze charm and authority in equal measures. Emraan Hashmi has done full justice to his role as he manages to bring out the internal conflict of his character, Nikhil, with panache. It felt good to see Sanjay Dutt back on screen as the veteran actor gives an earnest performance as an honest cop Kale. The screenplay is crisp and the film doesn’t fall prey to the usual practice of Bollywood films of dragging the film into an overly stretched second half. A special mention to the cheeky one liners spouted by Hashmi and Dutt as it brings a smile on your face. Though unnecessary, I did enjoy sexy Shraddha Kapoor’s Dance Basanti. What’s bad: All the good work done in the first half is lost when film enters the familiar territory of crime thriller post interval. Not just the predictable plot, but the contrived back story behind the formation of Ungli gang was a huge turn off for me. I mean, come-on guys, do you think you can emotionally manipulate me by telling some sad story about injustice done to Arunoday Singh in coma? I would have preferred that the motive of this gang was hidden instead. Romantic track between Emraan and Kangana looks forced and sudden. The plot kicks in only at the second half, so you can spot the director rushing through the story not giving enough time for the characters to interact and react with conviction. The talented Kangana Ranaut gets a raw deal as she is stuck in a caricaturish role with limited screen time to make any impact. No wonder she has been missing from the promotions of Ungli. Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi are just there to fill the frame. In some of the tasks which the Ungli gang pulls off, especially in the climax, it is surprising to see that not all members of the gang are present, which in turn makes me wonder if Rensil D’Silva struggled in handling an ensemble starcast. What to do? Keeping aside all its flaws and shortcomings, Ungli is still a decent entertainer and warrants a one time watch as there is nothing much to munch on for movie goers at theatres this weekend. Go with zero expectations and chances are that you won’t show me your ‘ungli’ for recommending Ungli. Rating: 2.5 out of 5 * Poor ** Average *** Good **** Very good ***** Excellent

Aamir Khan has managed to build a heck lot of curiosity amongst the masses with PK, which is all set to hit the theatres on December 19. Though the whole wide world knows that Aamir’s character name in the film is PK, which is also the title of the Rajkumar Hirani directorial. But the reason behind naming him PK in the film has been kept under the wraps, until now. The makers of PK have released the first dialogue promo of the film in which the secret behind the perfectionist Khan’s character name is revealed. Watch the video, coz we don’t want to spoil the fun by telling it all in words. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, PK revolves around a stranger in the city, who asks questions no one has asked before. Known only by his initials, PK’s innocent questions and childlike curiosity will take him on a journey of love, laughter and letting-go. Apart from Aamir, the film also stars Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani.  Sharma at lavish wedding ceremony in Taj Falaknuma palace in Hyderabad 
on November 18. 
 
The entire Khan family returned to Mumbai to 
throw a gala wedding reception for the newly weds. The reception party 
was organised at Taj Lands End and it was not any less grand than the 
wedding itself. Bigwigs from the industry, fro veterans to newcomers, 
made an appearance at the reception. 
 
Among them were Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Ritesh Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Dilip Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna and many others. Newbies Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty who will soon be launched by Salman Khan in Hero, also stepped in to attend the party but they came separately. 
 
The biggest names of the film fraternity graced the occasion with their presence but it was a special delight to see SRK at the bash! The gentleman that he is, walked Salman’s mother Salma Khan to her car and later was seen enjoying a casual banter with Salman. 
 
Not only did Arpita Khan’s wedding turn out to be the wedding of the year, but the Khan reunion of Salman and Shah Rukh also became the patch-up of all time!
